PROBLEM BASED LEARNING METHOD IN TEACHING WRITING SKILL AT 10TH GRADE OF SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 1 PURWOKERTO

This study aims to analyze the implementation and challenges of Problem Based Learning (PBL) method in teaching writing skill at 10th grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto. These findings reveal that teacher systematically succeeded in implementing PBL through five main systematic stages. First, introducing contextual problems, for example, teacher presented real-world scenarios about creating promotional content on Indonesian wildlife to attract foreign tourists. Second, organizing students into learning groups, for example, teacher divide students into small heterogeneous groups, with each group choosing one endemic animal to write about. Third, guiding the investigation process, for example, teacher facilitate students in gathering information from various sources and provide a list of vocabulary related to descriptive texts. Fourth, assist in the development of written work, for example, the teacher provides individual feedback on student drafts and guides them in revising their descriptive texts. Fifth, evaluate the problem-solving process, for example, the teacher leads a reflection session where students present their final work and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their writing. Behind this success, teacher face complex challenges, ranging from the difficulty of designing problems that are both aligned with the curriculum and interesting to students, to students limited English vocabulary and grammar, which hinders the expression of ideas, to time management constraints due to limited class hours, to unbalanced group dynamics where higher-ability students tend to dominate discussions. Therefore, this study concludes that the implementation of PBL in writing instruction was successfully implemented through five systematic stages, despite challenges such as difficulties in designing questions that were in line with the curriculum, limitations in students vocabulary and grammar, time management, and unbalanced group dynamics
